India vs West Indies: No Mayank Agarwal as BCCI announce 12-man squad for second Test
By Our Correspondent, 11/10/2018, New Delhi

Mayank Agarwal seemed in line for a Test debut in the second Test between India and West Indies in Hyderabad but unfortunately the youngster found no place in the 12-man squad BCCI announced on Thursday. Other than the playing XI that played in Rajkot, Shardul Thakur was named as the 12th member of the team.

There were suggestions that Kohli could make way for Mayank, who has been knocking the door of Indian Test team for a long time, for the second match after the hosts secured a comprehensive victory of an innings and 272 runs in Rajkot. With the 27-year-old being denied an opportunity yet again, it seems the Indian team management is in no mood to tinker with the combination as yet.

Agarwal, who is an opening batsman himself, was an active participant in the practice session ahead of the Hyderabad Test. Although the selection committee has been subjected to criticism for not handing the talented batsman an opportunity, the fact that Mayank couldn't find a place in the team against West Indies, might affect his chances of travelling with the squad for the forthcoming Australia tour too.

Here's India's 12-man squad for the second Test against West Indies: Prithvi Shaw, KL Rahul, Virat Kohli, Cheteshwar Pujara, Ajinkya Rahane, Rishabh Pant, Ravindra Jadeja, Ravichandran Ashwin, Kuldeep Yadav, Mohammed Shami, Umesh Yadav, Shardul Thakur

Agarwal had a sensational 2017-18 domestic season where he scored 1160 runs in 13 innings in the Ranji Trophy. In November 2017, he made his case for a spot in the Test even stronger, as he went on to bag a first triple hundred in first-class cricket.

Soon after, Mayank continued his impressive form with the bat with 723 runs in 8 matches at a phenomenal average of 90.37 in the 2017-18 Vijaya Hazare Trophy campaign. With such performance, Mayank went on to end the season as the highest run-getter in the domestic season, which is now an all-time record for an Indian batsman.

Other than Agarwal, Mohammad Siraj was another player who was brought in the squad after some influential performances in domestic cricket. While there were suggestions that Siraj could replace Mohammed Shami in the team in Hyderabad, the team management went with a tired and tested lineup once again.

The BCCI are also expected to announce the squad for ODI series against Windies later today. Rishabh Pant is a big favourite to be included in the team and make his One-Day international debut later on after impressing in the Test jersey.
