Militants target Army convoy in J&K's Anantnag
By Our Correspondent, 19/06/2017, Srinagar

A group of militants attacked an Army convoy in south Kashmir's Anantnag district on Sunday.

The militants fired at army vehicles in Bijbehara area and fled from the spot, after which security forces started a search operation. No casualty was reported. Security forces said the Valley was on the edge on the event of the ICC Champions Trophy final match between India and Pakistan.

Authorities ordered the closure of Srinagar-based NIT, which had earlier witnessed clashes between Kashmiri and non-Kashmiri students during the 2016 World Cup T20 semi-final.

Kashmiri students had allegedly celebrated India's loss to West Indies, causing uproar on the campus. Union minister of state for home Kiren Rijiju, who was in Jammu for the final match of a football series organised by the Sashastra Seema Bal, said the Centre would provide the necessary support to maintain peace in J&K. "All the strategies have to be dealt with due consultation with the elected government in the valley," Rijiju said.

He also referred to terrorists killing and mutilating the bodies of six policemen in Achabal town of Anantnag district on Friday and said Kashmiris should not bow down to such acts.
