Congress MP from Assam Ripun Bora on Tuesday wrote a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, seeking extension of the 'Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Anna Yojana' (PMGKAY) and said its "discontinuation will further worsen the economic situation of the country".
"The Food Secretary of GoI recently had declared that PMGKAY scheme will not be extended further beyond November 30. This has not only created panic among the beneficiaries but also brought great tension in their families," Bora wrote.
He further said discontinuation of the scheme will further worsen the economic situation of the country as well as the day-to-day lifestyle of the people.
The Rajya Sabha MP observed that without improving the day-to-day life condition, individual economic condition, per-capita income, a country can never progress.
"In a welfare state like ours, the welfare of the country is the prime priority of the Government. Therefore, I urge upon your good office for continuation of the Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Anna Yojana till the economic situation improves," Bora said in his letter addressed to the PM.
Last week, Food Secretary Sudhanshu Pandey had said that there was no proposal to extend the PMGKAY beyond November 30.
