After three rounds of meetings between poll strategist Prashant Kishor and Congress leadership, and a report by a panel which analysed his suggestions and roadmap, Congress President Sonia Gandhi has decided to constitute an 'Empowered Action Group' to address upcoming political challenges, the party said on Monday. This announcement was made by the party's chief spokesperson Randeep Singh Surjewala. There was no clarity however on whether Kishor will be joining the party. The party also announced that a 'Chintan Shivir' or brainstorming session will be held in Rajasthan's Udaipur from May 13-15 to analyse recent poll results and a roadmap for the future. Around 400 Congress leaders from across the country would attend the three-day session. Kishor has held three meetings with Sonia Gandhi and other Congress leaders over the last couple of weeks, and has made a detailed presentation on the roadmap for the party. The Congress president constituted a committee which included P Chidambaram, Ambika Soni, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, Digvijaya Singh, Jairam Ramesh, Mukul Wasnik, KC Venugopal, and Randeep Singh Surjewala to look into the suggestions made by Kishor. The committee submitted its report on April 21, after which the party had announced that a decision will be taken in 72 hours over the next course of action. On Monday, party's chief spokesperson Surjewala announced that an 'Empowered Action Group - 2024' will be constituted to "address the political challenges ahead". While the buzz over Kishor joining the party continues, no decision has been taken on the issue so far. This also comes as Kishor's iPAC inked a deal with the Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) in Telangana, which has upset the state Congress leaders. At the Chintan Shivir, which was announced during the Congress Working Committee (CWC) meeting held post the defeat faced by the party in polls in five states, the roadmap suggested by Kishor is set to be a key point of discussion. The Congress has also announced six committees which will prepare papers and lead discussions on different issues. The committees include several leaders who have in the recent past expressed concern over the functioning of the party. The panel which will lead discussions on political issues includes Rajya Sabha Leader of Opposition Mallikarjun Kharge as convener, senior leader Ghulam Nabi Azad, Shahi Tharoor and Gaurav Gogoi along with others. The group on social justice and empowerment has Salman Khurshid as convener, former Lok Sabha speaker Meira Kumar, and Digvijay Singh, the group on economy is led by P Chidambaram, and has Anand Sharma and Sachin Pilot among its members. For suggestions on organisational issues, the group is led by Mukul Wasnik, while Bhupinder Singh Hooda is leading the committee on farmers and agriculture, and Amarinder Singh Warring is the convenor for the group on youth and empowerment. Kishor, in his presentation of over 600 pages, among other things suggested the party to go solo in states like Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and Odisha, while in states like Tamil Nadu, West Bengal, and Maharashtra it should fight in alliance with other like minded parties.
