Normal life remained unaffected in Tamil Nadu and there was a remarkable improvement in public transport services, but , banking services continued to remain crippled as the two-day nation-wide General Strike called by various Trade Unions in protest against the anti-people policies of the BJP-led NDA government at the Centre, entered the final day on Tuesday. More than one lakh police personnel, including 15,000 in Chennai City, were deployed on security duty in view of the two-day Bharat Bandh, for which the ruling DMK has pledged its support. The State government had already issued a warning to the employees of all departments of no work -no pay to those who participated in the strike. While shops and business establishments functioned as usual, schools and colleges also remained open in Chennai city and in other parts of the state. Banking operations were crippled as cash transactions and cheque clearances came to a grinding halt across the State. Metropolitan Transport Corporation (MTC) bus services which were badly hit in Chennai city yesterday as it operated a mere ten per cent of the buses with the transport staff abstaining from duty, operated to near full capacity today. Official sources said most government buses were operated in Chennai and other parts of Tamil Nadu on day two of Bharat bandh. According to official data, around 98 per cent (3,169) of the MTC buses were operated in Chennai today, while around 90 per cent buses were operated across the State. For the second consecutive day, heavy crowds were seen in suburban EMU trains and Chennai Metro Train services.
