A six-member investigation team of the state-run Gandhi Medical College (GMC) in Bhopal on Saturday night said People’s Medical College had followed ICMR protocol in the follow-ups on a Covaxin trial volunteer, who died nine days after he got the first dose. Preliminary autopsy suspected poisoning, and the final viscera report is awaited.
The GMC clean chit on protocol came even as Bhopal police opened an investigation into the death of Deepak Marawi, 45, and sent a list of queries to People’s Hospital.
CM Shivraj Singh Chouhan stepped up to scotch controversy and said, “The viscera has been sent for examination. The side effects of any vaccine are seen within two to three days, and not after such a long period. I request the press to take the issue seriously so that there is no adverse assumption that could impact vaccination. We are watchful of every aspect.”
Deepak’s family has said he was feeling unwell after the first dose. The GMC probe committee, set up by directorate of medical education, studied post-vaccination follow-up, and said: “After looking into the case report form, it has been ascertained that clinical trial protocols were followed.”
