Agartala, 12th August 2025: After residing on government land for over four decades, 19 families in the West Jaipur area have been served eviction notices by the local administration, triggering deep distress among the residents. With no financial means to purchase land, the families have now submitted a deputation to the District Magistrate, demanding alternative housing arrangements.
According to local sources, these families have been living on the land for approximately 40 to 45 years, consistently paying municipal taxes and electricity bills in accordance with government regulations. Most of the residents earn their livelihood as daily wage laborers or domestic workers. The community comprises over a hundred individuals, including children, women, and elderly citizens.
The sudden issuance of eviction notices has left them in a state of panic. “We simply cannot afford to buy land,” said one resident, highlighting the economic vulnerability of the group.
The families had previously approached local corporators and the area’s MLA for assistance. However, with the deadline for eviction drawing near, they have now turned directly to the District Magistrate, urging the administration to ensure their rehabilitation alongside ongoing development initiatives.
“We are not against development,” one resident stated. “But we need a roof over our heads to survive. In the past, many families were evicted due to state development projects, but they were provided with alternative housing. We hope the government will take a humane approach this time as well.”
The residents emphasized that while they support progress, it should not come at the cost of their basic right to shelter. Their plea adds to a growing chorus of voices across the state calling for inclusive development that safeguards vulnerable communities.
