Agartala, 24th July 2025: The students of Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) lifted a prolonged road blockade this afternoon following direct intervention by North District Superintendent of Police, Abhinas Rai. The students had been demanding the immediate arrest of those involved in an alleged assault case reported by Dharmanagar College students earlier this week.
Protests first erupted on July 22, with ABVP members blocking the road in front of Dharmanagar police station for nearly eight hours. The blockade was lifted at around 8 PM that day after Additional Superintendent of Police intervened. However, the students issued a 12-hour ultimatum for police action, warning of further protests if no arrests were made.
With no arrests made within the deadline, ABVP activists resumed their protest today at around 11 AM, once again blocking the key Tri-Junction road, an arterial route leading to North Tripura District Hospital. This caused massive disruption, affecting commuters, emergency patients and daily traffic in the town with limited alternate routes.
Raising slogans like “You wear bangles, you wear sarees,” the protesters vocally criticized the district administration and SP Abhinas Rai, questioning the delay in action. “Despite a serious complaint, the culprits are roaming free under the open sky. This is a complete failure of the Dharmanagar police administration,” shouted one protester.
Amid growing public frustration over the inconvenience caused by the repeated blockades, many locals voiced concern. “This is a small town. There’s hardly any space or alternative routes. The public is being harassed,” said a resident near the protest site. “If there’s a grievance, why not take it up legally with the college principal or higher authorities?” he added.
At around 3 PM, SP Abhinas Rai met the protesting students and assured them that the accused individuals would have to surrender at the police station within four days, failing which legal proceedings would be initiated.
Following this assurance, the students agreed to temporarily lift the blockade but warned of intensified agitation if their demands were not met. “If arrests are not made within the next four days, our protest will spread across the entire North District. Colleges will be shut, and the national highway will be blocked,” an ABVP leader declared.
