Agartala, 24th August 2024:   In response to the devastating floods that have wreaked havoc across Tripura, Tripura Pradesh Congress Committee (TPCC) President Asish Kumar Saha has written a letter to Governor Indrasena Reddy Nallu, urging prompt and adequate compensation for the affected families. Saha also requested the Governor to direct the appropriate authorities to send an all-party delegation to the Central Government to highlight the severity of the disaster and secure sufficient central assistance for flood relief, rehabilitation, and infrastructure rebuilding.

In his letter, Saha highlighted the catastrophic impact of the recent floods, which have displaced thousands and claimed the lives of at least 26 people. The widespread destruction has left lakhs of residents in distress, with infrastructure across the state severely damaged. Saha noted that the floodwaters have inundated agricultural paddy fields and pisciculture ponds, leading to the loss of livelihoods for many who depend on farming and fishing. Livestock owners, too, have faced devastating losses, watching helplessly as their financial sustenance drowned in the floodwaters.

Saha described the collapse of mud walls in many homes and the relentless downpour triggering landslides, further worsening the situation. Public buildings, including schools and hospitals, have been submerged, severely hampering relief and rescue operations. The sudden surge of floodwater left people unable to save their last belongings, creating an alarming and terrifying scenario across both rural and urban areas. The absence of clean drinking water and proper sanitation facilities is now posing a serious health risk, with the potential for waterborne diseases to spread rapidly.

Recognizing the urgent need for food, clothing, and medical aid, Saha called on the Union Government to allocate sufficient relief funds to support the flood victims. He urged the Governor to ensure that the state’s administrative machinery conducts a transparent and unbiased survey to accurately assess the damage caused to individual families, regardless of their political affiliation, caste, creed, or religion.

Additionally, Saha requested the formation of all-party committees at various levels—Assembly Constituency, Sub-Division, District, and State—headed by government officials to monitor the relief efforts and act as watchdogs for the affected people. He assured the Governor of the Congress party’s full cooperation during this critical time, emphasizing the mental trauma and immense loss faced by the people of Tripura.
