Attack on auto-rickshaw driver: Road blockade held, demands arrest of accused persons

Khowai: May 25. Tension triggered in Khowai sub-division on Thursday following a severe attack upon auto-rickshaw driver on Wednesday last in the remote areas near Asharambari of the sub-division. In protest against this, auto-rickshaw drivers and locals of Asharambari in Khowai sub-division blocked Khowai-Kamalpur and Khowai-Champahaour at Baijalbari area from 7 AM onwards.

Speaking to media personnel at the blockade spot, one of the auto-drivers said that an auto-rickshaw driver named Tapas Paul had a heated debate with another person while returning from Ashrambari to Baijalbari. That person along with his accomplices chased the auto-rickshaw. At a point, the driver failed to control his vehicle and met with an accident on the roadside. Those people hailed from Asharambari area attacked Tapas Paul along with two passengers in his auto-rickshaw. At present, Tapas is fighting for his life while undergoing treatment at GBP Hospital.

The local people who participated in the road blockade demanded financial support has to be given for the injured Tapas as well as arrest the accused involved behind the attack while the auto-rickshaw drivers sought safety and security from the government for providing service to passengers on this route.
