Agartala, 25th June 2025: More than 100 indigenous leaders and workers of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) staged a protest on Wednesday in front of the official residence of Congress MLA Sudip Roy Barman in Agartala, demanding a public apology or his resignation over alleged remarks considered offensive to the indigenous community.

The protest was triggered by Roy Barman’s controversial statement during a public meeting at Ambassa in Dhalai district, where he allegedly said that BJP leaders “urinate on indigenous people”—a comment that has sparked widespread outrage among the indigenous population.

Addressing the media, BJP General Secretary Bipin Debbarma said, “We are protesting against the derogatory and unparliamentary language used by Congress MLA Sudip Roy Barman during his speech in Ambassa. His remarks were not only insulting to the indigenous people of Tripura but also to indigenous communities across the country. Our demand is clear—he must issue a public apology or resign from his position.”

Debbarma further warned that if their demands are not met, similar protests will be launched across the state. West Tripura Superintendent of Police Kiran Kumar stated that the situation remained under control and adequate security personnel had been deployed to disperse the demonstrators.

In response to the protest, Roy Barman hit back at the BJP, accusing the party of harboring “a perverted mentality” towards Scheduled Tribes, Scheduled Castes, and Other Backward Classes. He alleged that the BJP’s actions revealed a deep-seated prejudice against these communities.

“They protested for over an hour right in front of the police. They entered the MLA hostel premises, vandalised chairs, pelted stones, and more,” Roy Barman claimed. “I want to ask the public—have you ever witnessed a protest in front of any minister or MLA’s residence where protestors storm the premises, damage property, and police remain mute spectators? This is not my personal residence—it is public property, and today it was attacked. The BJP incited this violence.”
