Agartala, 13th March 2025: A severe drinking water shortage in Druhang Para under Bagmara BC prompted local residents to block the Assam-Agartala National Highway near Jawaharnagar BSF camp today . The protest was led by the local women’s group which lasted for over an hour and disrupted traffic leaving hundreds of vehicles stranded on both sides of the road.
Residents reported that the area’s drinking water machine had been out of service for two months, forcing the 50 families of Druhang Para to depend on well water. Despite submitting written appeals to the authorities, no action had been taken to resolve the crisis. The blockade, according to locals, was a last-resort attempt to demand urgent attention to their plight.Police officials including the Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Ambassa Police Station and the Sub-Divisional Police Officer arrived at the scene to negotiate with the protestors. However, representatives from the Drinking Water and Sanitation (DWS) department were notably absent. The OC assured the residents that drinking water would be supplied to the area by vehicle, following which the blockade was lifted.
The incident highlights the pressing need for immediate intervention to address the persistent water shortage in Druhang Para and ensure basic amenities for its residents.
