Agartala, 9th October 2025 : In a chilling reminder of the growing insecurity faced by government officials in Tripura, Executive Engineer Ranjay Debbarma of the Water Resources Department was viciously attacked late last night inside his government quarters in Kumarghat.
Sources informed that tensions had been simmering for weeks between the department and a group of contractors over a disputed bill related to a project in Raising Para, Fatikroy. That conflict took a violent turn when a group of 10 to 12 assailants stormed Debbarma’s residence around midnight. After knocking on the door, the attackers reportedly barged in as soon as it was opened, brutally assaulted the officer, smashed his mobile phone, and ransacked the house.
Kumarghat police station staff arrived swiftly and transported the injured official to the Kumarghat Sub-Divisional Hospital. Authorities have begun identifying the culprits, but no arrests have been made so far prompting questions about the effectiveness of law enforcement and the broader security apparatus.
“This was a premeditated attack. Ensuring the safety of government officials is now an urgent necessity. A formal complaint has been lodged with the Kumarghat police,” said Shyamal Kumar Das, Superintending Engineer of the Water Resources Department.
The incident has once again exposed the unchecked influence of contractor groups, alleged financial irregularities, and possible political shielding within government projects. As outrage grows, many are asking: if a government officer isn’t safe in his own quarters, where does that leave the common citizen? Is administrative inertia emboldening criminal elements? And who will guarantee the safety of Tripura’s public servants?
These questions strike at the heart of governance in the state, casting a shadow over claims of “double-engine” good governance.
