Agartala, 20th January 2026: A heart-wrenching incident of social neglect and human tragedy has taken place at Kulubari’s New Colony area of Sonamura. An eight-year-old boy Nayan Chandra Nama was left orphaned within a week after losing both his parents in circumstances that highlight extreme poverty and societal indifference.
The ordeal began in early January when Nayan’s mother, Champa Debnath, suffered severe burns while trying to keep herself warm by lighting a fire during the biting cold. With the help of a few compassionate locals, she was admitted first to Sonamura Hospital and later shifted to Agartala’s GB Hospital. However, due to lack of funds, her treatment was abruptly discontinued. Champa and her husband, Radhacharan Namah, survived on begging, leaving them unable to afford medical expenses. Champa eventually succumbed to her injuries.
Failing to bear the shock of his wife’s death, Radhacharan passed away just five days later in their temporary shelter at New Colony. His cremation was carried out with the help of local residents, including Shreejib Namah.
In a shocking display of neglect, Champa’s body remained in the GB Hospital morgue for nearly 17 days, treated like an unclaimed corpse. Yesterday, with assistance from Shreejib and a social organization named Aakanksha, her body was finally cremated at Battala crematorium. The final rites were performed by her eight-year-old son Nayan.
With no relatives or community support, Nayan has now been placed in a child home. Locals say the family had earlier lived in Manikyanagar under Boxanagar assembly constituency before moving to the abandoned veranda of a house in Kulubari’s New Colony about three to four months back.
Residents expressed anger that despite informing the local panchayat about the family’s plight, no help was extended. Adding to the outrage, while Nayan was left orphaned due to poverty, a lavish night cricket tournament was being held nearby with significant financial expenditure. The final match was attended by two ministers and the local MLA, yet none reportedly took notice of the destitute child.
This stark contrast between extravagance and neglect has sparked criticism among locals, who remain stunned by the tragedy and the failure of society to protect its most vulnerable.
