Agartala, 23rd March 2026:   The Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU) today organized a protest march towards the Legislative Assembly, pressing a four-point charter of demands, including regularization of services, payment of pending Dearness Allowance (DA), and repeal of the new Labour Codes.

The procession, which moved through various parts of the city, was intercepted by police at the Dimsagar area while advancing toward the Assembly. The obstruction led to a brief verbal altercation between protesters and law enforcement personnel, though the situation remained under control.

The programme was led by former Chief Minister and ex-Politburo member Manik Sarkar. The key demands raised by the organization include regularization of temporary workers, disbursement of pending DA and Dearness Relief (DR), non-implementation of the Central Labour Codes, and reinstatement of all retrenched employees.

Addressing the gathering, Sarkar launched a sharp attack on both the Central and State governments, alleging that the present administration is “anti-people and anti-labour.” He claimed that while India has seen multiple governments since independence, the current dispensation stands out for policies that undermine workers’ interests.

He further alleged that welfare schemes introduced in the post-independence period for the benefit of common people are gradually being dismantled, depriving workers of their rightful benefits. Highlighting that nearly 75 percent of the country’s population belongs to the working class, he accused the government of remaining indifferent to their concerns.

Sarkar asserted that the movement to safeguard workers’ rights would continue in the days ahead and vowed that the struggle would persist until all demands are fulfilled.
