Agartala, 6th October 2024:   A heated altercation over Durga Puja donations spiraled into violence in the Kadamtala block area, North District, leading to clashes between two communities and police intervention.

According to reports, the situation escalated after a Durga Puja committee allegedly demanded a hefty sum of ₹5000 from a driver transporting a patient. The driver refused, citing inability to pay, which reportedly provoked members of the local club to attack the vehicle occupants.

The situation took a violent turn when local residents, in defense of the driver, stormed into nearby houses and attacked club members. Men, women, and even children were reportedly injured as the tension spread throughout the neighborhood.

The conflict intensified, causing widespread disorder in the Kadamtala police station area. Police were forced to intervene with a mild lathi charge to restore order. North District Superintendent of Police Bhanu Pada Chakraborty promptly arrived at the scene, deploying police and paramilitary forces, including the Tripura State Rifles (TSR), to contain the unrest.

Two individuals, identified as Nirmalendu Sen and Dwipajoy Nath, have been arrested in connection with the incident. Following the arrests, some residents approached the local police station, requesting additional security measures to prevent further escalation.

Local sources reveal that minority community members entered the conflict, reportedly attacking common people and exacerbating the tension. District Superintendent of Police Bhanupada Chakraborty acknowledged the intense strain between the two groups, largely triggered by disputes over Durga Puja donation collections.

Police have since ramped up security in the area, and Superintendent Chakraborty reassured residents that the situation is under control. However, tensions remain palpable, with the possibility of further action, including the imposition of Section 163, should the unrest persist.

During the clashes, two homes and a local beauty parlor were vandalized. Residents are calling for the swift arrest of those responsible, while law enforcement continues its investigation.

The unrest highlights a growing concern across the state over forced Durga Puja donations, with many citizens voicing frustration over extortion-like tactics used by local clubs. Despite Chief Minister’s directives against such practices, public discontent is mounting as similar incidents continue to unfold in various parts of the state.

Authorities remain on high alert, monitoring the situation closely to prevent any further violence or disruption.
