Agartala, 23rd  November 2025: In a remarkable display of medical dedication, doctors at Unakoti District Hospital successfully carried out a complex orthopedic surgery on a patient suffering from Hepatitis-B, despite significant risks and limited resources.

The patient, a resident of the remote Dhanichhara village in Pecharthal block, had been living with Hepatitis-B for several years. Recently, he met with an accident that fractured two bones in his right arm. His family rushed him to Unakoti District Hospital, where orthopedic specialist Dr. Nirmal Debbarma diagnosed the need for an Open Reduction and Internal Fixation (ORIF) under General Anesthesia—a procedure considered highly risky for Hepatitis-B patients due to infection concerns.

Normally, such cases are referred to tertiary hospitals with advanced infection-control facilities. Dr. Debbarma initially decided to transfer the patient to Agartala’s GB Hospital. However, the patient’s family, facing severe financial constraints, pleaded for treatment at the local hospital. Rising to the occasion, Dr. Debbarma and his team implemented strict infection-control protocols in the operating theatre and prepared for the high-risk surgery.

On Saturday evening, the surgery was successfully performed under Dr. Debbarma’s leadership. He was assisted by anesthesiologist Dr. Amit Pal Choudhury, nursing officers Smriti Das and Kaveri Saha, OT assistants Mithun Mall and Arun Chakma, and GDA staff Subhash Debbarma and Shubhankar Saha. Following the operation, the patient was shifted to the ward and is now reported to be in stable condition.

The patient’s family expressed deep gratitude to Dr. Debbarma and the entire surgical team for their professionalism and courage. Medical staff at the hospital has been widely praised for overcoming financial, medical, and logistical challenges to deliver life-saving care.

This successful effort highlights that with commitment, skill, and teamwork, even district-level hospitals with limited facilities can achieve major medical breakthroughs.
