Agartala, 27th October 2025: The Tripura Pradesh Congress has called for a high-level investigation into the alleged transportation of narcotics into the state via railway wagons. Addressing a press conference at the Pradesh Congress Bhavan here today, party spokesperson Prabir Chakraborty expressed grave concern over the growing drug menace and its link to rising HIV/AIDS cases in the state.
Citing national statistics, Chakraborty claimed that Tripura’s HIV infection rate is disproportionately higher than the national average, attributing the surge to rampant drug abuse. Despite this alarming trend, he alleged that drug trafficking continues unabated.
According to the Congress, narcotics were brought into the state on October 16 and 19 through railway wagons. Chakraborty criticized the state government for celebrating the President’s Colours awarded to Tripura Police while failing to curb drug smuggling. He further alleged that police investigations have been sluggish, taking over 8 to 10 days merely to conduct searches at the residences of two transport company owners.
The Congress spokesperson accused the police of inefficiency and claimed the party has lost faith in the law enforcement agencies. He demanded that the Director General of Police ensure that no guilty party is shielded during the investigation.
“For the sake of national and state security, this issue must be investigated with utmost seriousness,” Chakraborty asserted, warning that the Congress would launch a public agitation if the matter is not addressed promptly.
