Agartala, 12th August 2025: The CPIM North Agartala regional committee has intensified its stance on electricity-related issues, staging a street protest today demanding the withdrawal of smart meters. Party leaders and workers marched through the city before submitting a deputation to officials at the Power Department.
Speaking to reporters during the demonstration, a senior CPIM leader criticized the installation of smart meters and the alleged arbitrary hike in electricity bills, calling them a source of severe hardship for ordinary citizens.
“Across the country, people are rising up against the imposition of smart meters. In West Bengal, BJP leaders are vocally attacking the Trinamool government over this issue. Yet here in Tripura, a BJP-ruled state, the same leaders are subjecting people to extreme harassment in the name of smart meters,” he said.
The leader further alleged that the smart meter rollout disproportionately affects economically weaker sections, accusing the government of exploiting them financially. “This is nothing short of pocket-picking under the guise of modernization. We will not allow smart meters to be installed in Tripura,” he declared.
