Agartala, 16th August 2025: Former Chief Minister Manik Sarkar accused the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Election Commission of conspiring to deprive citizens of their voting rights through “undemocratic and unfair” means.
Reacting to the ongoing controversy over the thorough revision of the voter list, Sarkar said, “A storm has already been created inside and outside Parliament on this issue. This is not a sign of strength, but a sign of weakness for the Election Commission. The BJP’s isolation from the people is increasing day by day.”He alleged that names of voters, particularly from minority and Dalit communities, were being selectively deleted to benefit the ruling party.
“If the people can vote, the vote will go against the BJP. Out of fear, they are trying to cancel names in a targeted manner,” Sarkar said. The CPI(M) veteran welcomed the intervention of the Supreme Court, which recently directed the Election Commission to provide details regarding the exclusion of 65 lakh voters in Bihar. The apex court has asked for the old list numbers, the constituencies concerned, and the reasons for deletion of these names.
Sarkar expressed confidence that citizens across the country will resist such attempts to undermine democracy.Leader of the Opposition Jitendra Chaudhury also hailed the Supreme Court directive, calling it a “positive step.”
He said, “The real intention behind the sudden revision of the voter list just two months before the Bihar elections has now been exposed. The most shocking part is that many voters declared dead and deleted from the list have personally appeared in Delhi to prove they are alive.”
He further said that the CPI(M) would wait for the Supreme Court’s final verdict on the matter, but asserted that the party will continue to oppose any move to disenfranchise citizens.
