Agartala, 8th July 2025: The CPI(M) Tripura State Committee on Tuesday submitted a letter to Chief Minister Prof. Dr. Manik Saha, demanding that the state police be allowed to function in a non-partisan manner and take firm legal action against law-breakers, irrespective of their political or religious affiliations.
A four-member delegation comprising Leader of the Opposition Jitendra Chaudhury, former ministers Naresh Jamatia and Manik Dey, and Krishna Rakshit alleged a series of violent attacks on opposition workers. According to the letter, the perpetrators are allegedly miscreants backed by the ruling BJP and its ally Tipra Motha.
“It is most unfortunate and disturbing that while you, as the Minister in charge of Home Affairs, claim the law and order situation in Tripura is normal, miscreants patronized by BJP and Tipra Motha continue to launch brazen attacks on opposition campaign activities, exposing the hollowness of your so-called ‘Sushashan’,” the CPI(M) leaders wrote.
The delegation cited multiple incidents between June 17 and July 7, during which opposition workers were assaulted and party offices were vandalized—often in the presence of police personnel, who allegedly acted as mute spectators or even abettors.
“To sum up all the above incidents, it conclusively establishes that the law and order situation is no longer in the hands of the police, but at the mercy of miscreants enjoying political patronage. This alarming trend, coupled with police inaction, has allowed the deterioration of overall law and order in the state,” the letter stated.
Reaffirming their faith in the office of the Chief Minister, the CPI(M) urged Dr. Saha to allow police personnel to act impartially and uphold the rule of law. “Please don’t allow the prestige of Tripura Police, recently honoured with the ‘President’s Colour’, to be tarnished by the partisan actions of a few officers acting to suppress the opposition,” the letter concluded.
