Agartala, 12th October 2025 : Despite the state government’s announcement that salaries of all government employees would be disbursed by September 26 ahead of the festive season, nearly 2,500 contractual MGNREGA workers in Tripura are yet to receive their wages for the month of September.
These workers, who earn modest incomes under the rural employment scheme, continue to report to duty daily despite the delay. However, the non-payment of wages before the Durga Puja festivities has plunged many of their families into financial distress.
Several workers have alleged that the delay, despite a clear government directive, amounts to “step-motherly treatment” towards MGNREGA employees.
While there has been no official statement from the government regarding the matter, administrative sources have attributed the delay to technical and accounting issues in processing payments.
Even so, officials and social groups acknowledge that the delay during the festive period has caused deep uncertainty and frustration among the workers.
Questions are now being raised about the government’s preparedness and commitment to its own announcement. Stakeholders have urged the state administration to resolve the issue immediately and ensure timely disbursement of wages, warning that continued negligence could lead to widespread protests among MGNREGA staff in the coming days.
