Agartala, 19th February 2026: A massive fire broke out late last night at Champa Haor Chowmuhani in the Office Tilla area of Khowai town, reducing at least 12 shops to ashes. Preliminary estimates suggest losses amounting to several lakhs of rupees.
Local sources informed that the blaze was first spotted around 1:30 a.m. when flames erupted from one shop. Within minutes, the fire spread rapidly to adjacent establishments due to the dense clustering of shops in the area. Residents watched helplessly as the inferno engulfed grocery, clothing, and electronics outlets.
The Tripura Fire Service rushed to the scene with three fire engines, assisted by police water cannons. It took nearly two hours to bring the flames under control. By then, all goods inside the shops had been destroyed.
Affected shopkeepers reported that cash and important documents stored overnight were also lost in the fire. For many, the shops were their sole source of livelihood. “We have lost everything. This was our only means of survival,” one distressed trader said.
Authorities have yet to determine the exact cause of the fire.
