Agartala, 10th October 2025 : In a renewed push to integrate nature and nutrition into the learning environment, the Education Department of South Tripura district has launched a revitalization campaign for school kitchen gardens under the PM Poshan Scheme. The initiative aims to transform these gardens into vibrant hubs of experiential learning and nutritional support for young students across the Sabroom subdivision.
After a prolonged hiatus, the department has appointed Ranjan Debnath, Assistant Headmaster of PM Shri Sabroom Higher Secondary Girls’ School, to spearhead the program. On Thursday, Debnath, accompanied by IS Jenang Mog of Rupaichari, visited several schools to assess garden conditions and engage with teachers. He emphasized plans to resume seasonal crop cultivation during the winter months to enhance the nutritional intake of students through fresh produce.
Teachers have welcomed the initiative. Biplab Das of Harina Girls’ School shared, “As soon as the rains stop, we’ll begin planting seasonal vegetables again. It’s a hands-on experience for the children, they learn to plant and care for crops, and they get to eat fresh vegetables too.”
More than just a patch of farmland, these kitchen gardens serve as living classrooms. Students witness the journey from seed to harvest, gaining lessons in biology, sustainability, and responsibility. The vegetables grown are incorporated into the school’s midday meals, helping maintain balanced nutrition and reducing reliance on processed foods.
In an era marked by rising childhood malnutrition and junk food consumption, the school-based kitchen garden initiative stands out as a beacon of hope. It not only nourishes the body but also cultivates a deeper appreciation for nature and hard work among children.
The South Tripura Education Department has announced plans to gradually expand the program across the district, envisioning a future where every child grows into a “healthy and aware citizen.”
