Agartala, 8th October 2024: Tripura Police has arrested eight individuals in connection with the communal violence that erupted on Sunday in Kadamtala, located in North Tripura District. The violence reportedly stemmed from the forceful collection of donations for Durga Puja celebrations.
Bhanupada Chakraborty, Superintendent of Police for the North District, confirmed that the situation in Kadamtala has now stabilized and is under control. “We have arrested eight people in relation to the forced collection of subscriptions and the subsequent violence. Sufficient security forces have been deployed, and peace meetings are being held by members of both religious communities. The situation is peaceful and fully under control,” Chakraborty stated.
The incident occurred when a Muslim family, on their way to Assam for medical treatment, was allegedly stopped by a Durga Puja committee and asked to pay a large sum of money as a donation. A confrontation ensued, leading to a scuffle. Following the altercation, members of the local Muslim community gathered in protest at the police station, demanding action against the Puja organizers. As a result, two individuals were arrested based on the complaint.
However, the situation quickly escalated when unidentified miscreants launched attacks on the local marketplace, vandalizing and setting shops on fire. This sparked further tension in the area. Several shops were looted and damaged, and a number of homes were also targeted.
The violence resulted in the death of one person and left several others, including security personnel, injured.
