Agartala, 22nd December 2024:    The 17th annual state conference at the Krishak-Khet Majdoor Bhavan at the Melarmath in capital city on Sunday saw former Power Minister Manik Dey expressing grave concerns about the current state of Tripura’s power systems. Dey highlighted the precarious situation, citing the closure of the power system in Baramura, which previously generated about 40 megawatts of electricity.

“Today, the power system in Baramura has been shut down. We used to get 40 megawatts of electricity from there,” Dey stated. He further noted that Rukhia, which once produced 60 megawatts, now only generates 19 megawatts. “Before 2018, the state generated over 100 megawatts of electricity. Currently, we are not even generating 20 megawatts,” he added.

Dey’s remarks underscored the fears of the workers’ community regarding the future of electricity demand and their salaries and allowances. “If this continues, Tripura will have to buy electricity from outside, increasing the debt burden. One day, the company may close,” he warned. He and the organization’s leadership expressed their concern that the power corporation is being pushed into a dangerous direction, emphasizing the importance of addressing these issues at the conference.

The conference included discussions on how to protect the power corporation and ensure the provision of electricity services to the people. Dey also voiced opposition to the trend of handing over power corporations to private companies across the country. “The fight will start in the coming days across the state on these issues,” he declared.

Dey highlighted the lack of employment in the power corporation and the attacks on workers while providing services. “The government is only talking about development, but nothing is being done,” he criticized. The conference held important discussions on joining the struggle with the people to address these challenges.

Other leaders of the organization were also present at the conference, supporting Dey’s call for action and emphasizing the need for a united effort to safeguard the state’s power systems and ensure reliable electricity services for the people of Tripura.
