From poverty to prosperity: Krishnachandra Das emerges as model farmer in South Tripura

Agartala, 5th May 2025:  Once a child vendor in the alleys of Sabroom, Krishnachandra Das of Thaibong Gram Panchayat has transformed his life through sheer determination and hard work. Today, he stands as a beacon of hope for hundreds of unemployed youths in South Tripura, earning the title of a “Progressive Farmer” and becoming a symbol of self-reliance and resilience.

Forced to drop out after Class VIII due to financial hardship, Krishnachandra began his journey in 2015 by renting a small pond for fish farming. Over the years, he expanded his efforts into poultry and pig farming, gradually establishing a fully integrated farm. As of now, his enterprise includes 19 ponds, around 40 pigs, and a broiler unit housing nearly 8,000 chickens.

Despite severe setbacks during the catastrophic August 2024 floods—where 15 of his pond embankments were breached and the poultry unit submerged—resulting in an estimated loss of Rs 60 lakh, Krishnachandra managed to rebuild his farm from the ground up. His indomitable spirit earned him the Second Prize for Progressive Farming in Tripura in 2024, formally conferred at a state-level event in Agartala.

Currently, his farm employs nine permanent workers, each earning between Rs 9,000 and Rs 12,000 per month. He is also actively involved in the Feni Agro Producer Company Limited, a Farmer Producer Organization (FPO) supporting 172 farmers in the Sabroom subdivision. The FPO is headed by noted farmer Biswajit Majumdar as Chief Managing Director.

On May 1, 2025, South Tripura District Magistrate Mohammad Sajjad P., Dakshin Tripura Zilla Parishad Dipak Datta, SDM Shibajyoti Datta, and CDO Anupam Das visited his farm to commend his achievements. Officials pledged ongoing government support for his initiatives.

Speaking to media personnel here, Krishnachandra urged youth to consider self-employment. “Instead of wasting years after graduation chasing jobs, young people should believe in their potential and build something of their own,” he said.

His story, included in a special magazine published under the initiative of former District Magistrate Saju Vaheed A, continues to inspire rural entrepreneurship across Tripura.
