Agartala, 30th November 2025: The Indigenous People’s Front of Tripura (IPFT) today held a meeting at the Agartala Press Club to form its 2025 Executive Committee. The meeting was attended by IPFT President Premkumar Reang, General Secretaries Shuklacharan Nowatia and Swapan Debbarma, among others.
After the meeting, General Secretary Swapan Debbarma told reporters that discussions were held regarding upcoming committee elections in TTAADC villages as well as the state-level conference.
Debbarma announced that during the ongoing Winter Session of Parliament, 100–150 IPFT members from Tripura will stage separate sit-ins in New Delhi, pressing for state-specific demands.
He said that ahead of the Parliament session, the party will raise its demand for the passage of the 125th Constitutional Amendment Bill to upgrade the current TTAADC into the Tripura Territorial Council. The protests are scheduled to take place by 20 December.
In addition, the party plans to hold a large public rally in Agartala—likely at Swami Vivekananda Maidan—to demand recognition of the Kokborok language in Roman script. Debbarma stated that through the 125th Constitutional Amendment, IPFT aims to ensure that TTAADC elections do not take place in 2026, and instead, Tripura Territorial Council (TTC) elections are held, where IPFT intends to contest in alliance with Tipra Motha and BJP. If this does not happen, the party said it may take further decisions.
Observers note that the IPFT’s current demands also reflect the party’s growing weaknesses. Despite being in government with BJP support, the party has been steadily losing influence since 2021, and upcoming ADC elections in the hills are expected to pose significant challenges. The IPFT is now attempting to leverage these protests to regain political relevance.
