Agartala, 16th February 2026: The Indigenous Peoples’ Front of Tripura (IPFT), a coalition partner in the state government, has voiced concerns over Chief Minister Professor (Dr.) Manik Saha’s involvement in the ongoing debate regarding the use of the Roman script.
Speaking to the media, IPFT General Secretary Swapan Debbarma emphasized that the Roman script issue is deeply tied to the cultural identity and emotions of the state’s tribal communities. He urged the Chief Minister to refrain from making public statements on the matter, citing its sensitive nature.
Debbarma highlighted that the Roman script debate has long been a source of confusion and unrest in the state. “Unless a permanent solution is reached, no government can maintain stability for long,” he said, recalling how the previous Left Front administration faced political setbacks due to its indecision on this issue.
He further remarked, “The question of the Roman script is extremely delicate and closely intertwined with tribal sentiments. As a native Bengali speaker, Chief Minister Manik Saha should avoid commenting publicly on this matter.”
The remarks from the IPFT underline growing tensions among indigenous groups in Tripura over language and script preferences—a debate that has emerged as a critical political flashpoint in the state.
