Agartala, 31st January 2025: The Kalamchaura police station staff conducted a significant operation today targeting the forest area adjacent to the old ONGC site and the deep forest of Pashaniya in North Kalamchaura. From 10 am to 2 pm, the operation saw the destruction of a large number of cannabis plants.
Led by SIs Biswajit Debbarma, Supritam Dey and Arun Debbarma of the Kalamchaura police station, along with a substantial force from the 9th Battalion TSR, the team successfully destroyed approximately 45,000 to 50,000 cannabis plants. The police cut down the plants and then used petrol to set them on fire, ensuring their complete destruction.
A total of four plots were utilized in the operation to clear the entire area. During the operation, a female cannabis farmer, who had been cultivating the plants for six months, broke down in tears upon seeing her crop destroyed.
The Tripura state administration has intensified its efforts to combat illegal cannabis cultivation, with regular drives being conducted in Kalamchaura, Boxnagar, and surrounding forest areas. A special police team has been deployed to identify and apprehend the main culprits behind the cultivation. Plans are also underway to enhance surveillance in forest areas using CCTV cameras and drones.
Additionally, a special campaign will be launched to raise awareness among locals about the legal consequences of engaging in illegal cannabis cultivation. According to administration sources, these enforcement drives will continue in the coming days to ensure the eradication of illegal cannabis cultivation in the region.
