Kumarghat Block Youth Cong criticizes Power dept over “Ghost Bills”

Agartala, 17th April 2025:  The Kumarghat Block Youth Congress has raised serious concerns over the functioning of the Power department. Block Youth Congress President Saurabh Chakraborty led the charge accusing the department of failing to provide consistent service while burdening consumers with “ghost bills.”

Speaking on the matter, Chakraborty said, “Not only is the service erratic in many areas, but consumers are also being issued inflated bills that defy explanation. This has caused widespread confusion and anger.”

In areas like Fatikroy, where new meters were installed by the Kumarghat branch of the Electricity Corporation, bills have skyrocketed. Consumers who typically paid modest amounts now report bills ranging from Rs 60,000 to Rs 80,000 per month. In Radhanagar village, after a switch from pre-paid to post-paid meters, many residents received bills tens of thousands of rupees higher than usual. For instance, Ashwini Das’ bill surged from Rs 300 to Rs 84,000, while Biplab Das received a shocking bill of Rs 1.9 lakh.

The responsibility for installing the new meters was entrusted to Techno Electric, a private firm. However, officials from the department have struggled to explain these anomalies. Amid mounting dissatisfaction, efforts to address and rectify the issue have reportedly begun. The Youth Congress demands swift action to restore fairness and accountability.
