Agartala, 15th May 2025:  Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK), located in Chhotoil, Unkoti, organized a one-day “Field Day on Protected Cultivation of High-Value and High-Quality Colored Capsicum” at its conference hall. The event aimed to educate farmers on modern protected farming methods that enhance yield and market value.

Experts highlighted the rising demand for red, yellow, and green capsicum, which are sought after both in India and globally. Agricultural Scientist Ratan Das stated, “The quality and productivity of capsicum can be significantly improved through protected cultivation. Techniques such as net houses or polyhouses help control environmental conditions, reduce pest infestations, and allow precise application of water and fertilizers through drip systems.” He further emphasized that colored capsicum commands double or higher prices compared to common varieties.

The program was inaugurated by Unakoti Zilla Parishad Sabhadipati Amalendu Das. Sabhadipati Das was accompanied by Chandipur Panchayat Samiti Chairman Sampa Das Pal, Vice Chairman Binoy Sinha, KVK Senior Scientist Biswajit Bal, Agricultural Scientist Ratan Das, Unakoti District Horticulture Department Deputy Director Vidya Mohan Chakma and Animal Scientist Chandrani Debbarma.

Deputy Director Chakma also spoke on the potential of palm oil tree cultivation stating, “Palm oil production is a lucrative venture in several Indian states. Farmers engaging in this cultivation receive a government grant of ₹77,500 per hectare, along with additional agricultural inputs.”

Zilla Parishad Sabhadipati Amalendu Das stressed the government’s commitment to supporting farmers, adding, “Both the central and state governments are working towards making farmers self-reliant and competitive in international markets through modern technology. Strengthening the agricultural sector will ultimately fortify the country.”

The event featured an exhibition of high-quality capsicum, where Agricultural Scientist Ratan Das guided farmers through practical demonstrations and addressed queries. Farmers showed keen interest, inspired by the promising returns of protected farming methods.

On the same day, Unakoti KVK distributed disease-free Khasi Mandarin grafted seedlings to farmers under the ICAR-IARI NEH Component-2024 initiative. This effort aims to enhance fruit production in the district.

Such initiatives by KVK not only introduce farmers to advanced agricultural techniques but also promote high-value farming, ensuring long-term sustainability and profitability. KVK reaffirmed its commitment to continuing such programs for the welfare of the farming community.
