Land mafia activities spark public outcry at Sekerkote

Agartala, 18th February 2026:    Residents of Sekerkote and adjoining areas are reeling under the alleged illegal activities of the so‑called Sukesh gang, which locals describe as a land mafia operating under political cover.

It is reported that the group has been filling agricultural land unlawfully under the cover of night, damaging roads and water pipelines in the process. Locals complain that drinking water pipelines have been broken, leaving streets flooded and worsening the condition of public roads.

Sukesh, once associated with the Left camp, reportedly joined the BJP after 2019 and has since been accused of misusing the party’s name to continue illegal operations with the support of minor leaders. Residents allege that the gang has taken over land belonging to individuals and transferred ownership to themselves and their associates.

Sources further claim that gambling dens are being run in areas such as Sekerkote, Pandabpur, Bikram Nagar and Fultali, drawing local youth into destructive habits. In addition, land filling near Sekerkot market’s western end and along the national highway beside Sekerkot bridge has left nearby households vulnerable to flooding during monsoon.

One particularly controversial incident involves land belonging to a relative of the local legislator, where filling activities have worsened road conditions and damaged water pipelines.

Despite repeated complaints, locals say no legal action has yet been taken against the gang. As a result, the group’s influence appears to be growing unchecked. Long‑time BJP workers are reportedly distancing themselves from the party, citing frustration over the protection allegedly enjoyed by the land mafia.

Residents now await to see what steps the government will take against Sukesh and his associates, whose activities have become a pressing concern for the community.
