Agartala, 12th January 2026: The legal fraternity in South Tripura’s Sabroom has erupted in protest after allegations surfaced that a senior lawyer was subjected to verbal abuse and death threats by Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM) Abhijit Singh Yadav (IAS).
In response, the Sabroom Bar Association announced an indefinite boycott of all proceedings in the SDM’s court and related registry work starting today.
The incident reportedly took place on January 7 during a hearing at a temporary courtroom inside the Nagar Panchayat building. Veteran lawyer Ratan Nath, who lodged the complaint, said that in his 22 years of practice he had never faced such “disgraceful conduct.”
Following an emergency meeting on January 09 last, the Bar Association resolved to launch the protest. Association secretary Advocate Apon Datta emphasized that an impartial investigation by the administration was essential to uphold the dignity of the judiciary.
An FIR has already been filed against the accused magistrate. Today, lawyers staged demonstrations in the Sabroom court premises, warning that unless exemplary action is taken swiftly, the agitation will spread across Tripura. Protesters said they are awaiting intervention from the state’s top administrative authorities.
