Agartala, 6th May 2025: A pall of grief has descended over Unakoti district after a tragic lightning strike claimed the life of a young man and left two others seriously injured in the Kanchanbari area on Tuesday afternoon.
The deceased, 29-year-old Gautam Roy, hailed from Radha Gobindapur village under Laljuri Gram Panchayat. He, along with a few others, was working in his rubber plantation when the lightning struck. The injured—identified as Nepal Gop (42) and Tapan Shil (42)—are currently undergoing treatment at the Unakoti District Hospital, where their condition remains critical.
According to eyewitnesses, the group had been working in the plantation since morning. As rain began pouring around the afternoon, they sought shelter under a hut in the field. It was then that a sudden, powerful bolt of lightning struck, leaving the workers unconscious and severely injured.
Gautam Roy was rushed to the Kanchanbari Primary Health Center but was declared dead on arrival. Dr. Mantoshi Chakma, who was on duty at the time, confirmed his death and referred the two injured to the district hospital for further treatment. Roy’s body has been kept in the hospital morgue for post-mortem examination.
Gautam Roy was the only child of his parents. His father is a central government employee. Known for his kind-heartedness, Gautam was a beloved figure in his village, often helping neighbors in times of need—especially in ferrying the sick to hospitals without ever accepting payment.
Minister Sudhangshu Das expressed his deep sorrow over the incident via social media, extending condolences to Gautam’s family and wishing the injured a speedy recovery.
