Agartala, 17th August 2025: A key stretch of road connecting Jatanbari to Shilachari via Karbook in Tripura has fallen into severe disrepair, prompting widespread concern among commuters and local leaders. The road previously maintained by the state’s Public Works Department (PWD) was handed over to the National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (NHIDCL) for conversion into a national highway. However, despite initiating construction work for the highway, NHIDCL has reportedly taken no effective steps to maintain or repair the existing road over the past two years.
With the responsibility now under NHIDCL, the PWD has declined to intervene, leaving the road in a dangerously dilapidated state. Large potholes have formed where the metalling and carpeting have eroded, turning into waterlogged traps during even light rainfall. Drivers say they are forced to navigate the stretch at great personal risk, with frequent minor accidents and rising vehicle maintenance costs becoming the norm.
Local MLA Sanjoy Manik Tripura expressed deep frustration over NHIDCL’s inaction, accusing the agency of ignoring repeated requests for repairs. “Even as an elected representative, my concerns are being dismissed,” he said, adding that NHIDCL officials have offered only vague assurances without delivering results.
Tripura has attempted to address the issue through multiple channels, including discussions with the PWD and the Rural Development Department, and even allocating funds from his MLA Local Area Development Fund. However, jurisdictional constraints have prevented any other department from intervening, as NHIDCL retains sole authority over the road.
The deteriorating condition of Karbook subdivision’s main road has left thousands of residents facing daily hardship. In response, local transport workers are reportedly planning a “Chakka Jam” protest in the coming days to demand urgent action.
