Agartala, 23rd April 2025: Bishalgarh witnessed high tension today as local youths took a stand against drug trafficking in the area. Acting on information, they booked alleged drug dealers and a buyer in possession of brown sugar and later handing them over to the Bishalgarh police station.
It is reported that the owner of a tiffin shop opposite Bishalgarh Sub-Divisional Hospital identified as Tutan Saha has been accused of illegally selling brown sugar. His father Gopal Saha is also allegedly linked to the operation. A section of youths from Bishalgarh determined to rid the town of narcotics, intercepted drug addict Akhter Hossain from Sonamura while he was purchasing four containers of brown sugar for Rs 400 from the father of Tiffin Shop. Following his booking, Hossain admitted that he regularly bought brown sugar from the tiffin shop’s owner.
The area near Office Tilla Hospital has reportedly become a hub for the brown sugar trade, drawing addicts from across the Sepahijala district. Despite several arrests in recent years, the sale of drugs has persisted, sparking frustration among residents. Expressing their anger when police arrived at the scene, locals claimed authorities are not taking stringent action against the drug trade, leading to concerns about the growing addiction among the area’s youth.
Residents have demanded more decisive police intervention to curb the illegal drug trade and protect Bishalgarh’s youth from its influence.
