Agartala, 28th August 2025: A critical stretch of road connecting Deohat to Old Shivthali in the heart of Kumarghat town collapsed into the Deo River early this morning, severing all transport links in the area and triggering widespread disruption. The incident took place around 7 am leaving hundreds of residents stranded and raising serious concerns over administrative oversight.
Local residents report that cracks first appeared on the road in 2023 following a surge in the Deo River’s water level. Despite repeated appeals for repairs, authorities allegedly failed to initiate any permanent restoration. A patchwork repair effort last year was deemed substandard, and the road has now been entirely consumed by the river just one year later.
The collapse has affected over 600 people across nearly 200 households. Schoolchildren, daily commuters and patients requiring urgent medical care are now forced to take long detours, exacerbating both logistical and health challenges. “We’re not just inconvenienced, we’re endangered,” said one local resident.
While the Deo River falls under the Flood Control Department, maintenance of the road is the responsibility of the Kumarghat Public Works Department (PWD). Officials from the PWD have visited the site following the incident, but no concrete steps have been announced beyond verbal assurances of swift repairs.
Residents are demanding immediate construction of an alternative route and permanent restoration of the collapsed road. Many fear that without urgent intervention, the upcoming monsoon season could bring even greater disaster.
