Agartala, 20th August 2025: Santirbazar Police Station staff have arrested a local resident on suspicion of involvement in an international human trafficking network, following allegations that he facilitated the trafficking of a housewife from Udaipur to another state.
According to the complaint filed by the victim’s family, the woman had left home claiming she was going to the bank, but instead traveled to Chandrapur in Udaipur, where she subsequently went missing. Her family launched a search, and later received a phone call informing them that a group of youths in Teliamura had allegedly detained her and were demanding money for her release.
Investigations led by the Udaipur Women’s Police Station revealed that the call was made by Amal Debnath, a resident of Santirbazar. Authorities suspect that Debnath played a key role in trafficking the woman in exchange for money. Audio recordings of conversations between Debnath and the victim’s husband, along with other evidence, were handed over to Santirbazar Police.
On Tuesday night, acting on the tip-off, Santirbazar Police detained Amal Debnath and later transferred him to Udaipur for further interrogation. Police sources indicate that Debnath has previously faced similar allegations related to trafficking women by luring them with false promises.
The victim was reportedly carrying 13 bhori (approximately 151 grams) of gold jewelry and ₹25,000 in cash at the time of her disappearance. Her husband expressed deep concern, stating that their young daughter has been crying continuously, pleading for her mother’s return.
Authorities are now working to trace the missing woman and determine whether Debnath’s interrogation can lead to her recovery. The case has sparked renewed attention on trafficking networks operating across state borders.
