Agartala, 16th February 2026: In a show of dissent, Umashankar Debbarma, MDC of the 19th Amtali-Go Laghati constituency under the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC), launched a sit-in protest at the entrance of the Sepahijala District Magistrate’s office. He was joined by party workers and supporters, demanding the cancellation of plans to establish the headquarters of the 49th Battalion of the Border Security Force (BSF) in Bishramganj Nagar Panchayat and the adjoining areas of Barojala and Chikonchhara.
Debbarma declared that he would continue the sit-in until the issue is resolved. The protest has drawn the attention of senior district officials, including Sepahijala’s Additional Superintendent of Police Rajib Sutradhar and Bishramganj Police Station OC Ajit Debbarma. Authorities attempted to persuade the MDC to shift the protest away from the office entrance, citing legal restrictions that prohibit demonstrations within 100 meters of the District Magistrate’s premises.
