Agartala, 7th April 2026: Expressing grave concern over a spate of attacks, harassment, and deaths involving delivery workers in Tripura, legislator Birajit Sinha has written to the Chief Minister demanding urgent intervention. He called for immediate measures to ensure legal protection and safety for those employed in the delivery sector.
In his letter, Sinha cited recent incidents that have shaken the state: the death of a young delivery worker in Dharmanagar, an assault in Narayanpur, and the fatal beating of another worker in Agartala. He noted that these tragedies have left families devastated and created fear and uncertainty among young workers.
Highlighting the risks delivery personnel face daily in crowded public areas, Sinha argued that such incidents cannot be dismissed as mere accidents. He stressed that they raise serious questions about the fundamental right to life and personal liberty guaranteed under Article 21 of the Constitution.
According to Sinha, delivery workers operate on public roads, which serve as their workplace, yet they lack recognition, safety policies, or legal safeguards. As a result, they are frequently subjected to violence, harassment, and unfair treatment. He emphasized that repeated incidents point not only to law-and-order failures but also to the absence of a dedicated policy framework for delivery workers, despite their vital role in ensuring food and essential supplies reach households daily.
To address the crisis, Sinha urged the government to form a state-level committee comprising the Labour Department, Home Department, legal experts, civil society, and delivery workers’ representatives. He also demanded the establishment of a welfare board to provide accident insurance, emergency compensation, legal aid, and social security. Additionally, he called for official recognition of public roads as delivery workers’ workplaces, administrative accountability for their safety, and time-bound investigations with strict action against perpetrators in cases of assault or death.
