Agartala, 29th October 2025: Michael Madhusudhan Dutta(MMD) College, Sabroom and Sabroom Sub-Divisional Legal Service Committee jointly organized legal awareness programme today. The discussion covered detailed information on the Indian Penal Code, the Indian Citizens’ Protection Act, and the Indian Evidence Act.
Member secretary Sabroom Legal Service authority, Civil Judge (JR Div.) cum JM 1st class Sabroom, Rupasree Deb and advocate Ratan Nath were present as the resource person, and the program was chaired by the college principal, Dr. Anupam Guha. Several members of the Sabroom Bar Association and students also attended the event.
JM Rupasree Deb and advocate Nath emphasized the need for these laws to replace colonial-era legislation and to modernize, make the judicial system more transparent, and ensure justice. They explained that the Indian Penal Code 1860 has been replaced by the Indian Penal Code 2023, which has abolished outdated offenses like sedition and defined new crimes that threaten the sovereignty and integrity of the state.
They further explained that the Indian Citizens’ Protection Act 2023 has replaced the Criminal Procedure Code 1973, introducing the facility to file FIR online. Arrested individuals can now immediately inform a person of their choice about their arrest.
The Indian Evidence Act 2023 has replaced the Indian Evidence Act 1872, recognizing digital records, emails, and server logs as legal evidence. The aim of these laws is to simplify lengthy judicial processes and ensure quick and effective justice. JM Deb and Advocate Nath expressed the view that these laws will enhance the quality of citizen services and make justice more accessible to everyone.
Principal Dr. Anupam Guha urged students to be conscious of these legal provisions and to develop overall skills alongside their studies.
