Agartala, 3rd December 2024: An awareness program was organized today under the initiative of National Service Scheme (NSS) of Sabroom’s Michael Madhusudan Dutta College. NSS adapted village, Vivekananda and Dumdama Gram Panchayat Pradhans Minti Das and Prasenjit Das along with locals of the village, NSS Program Officer Professor Arup Patari students and faculty members along with volunteers were present. Continuous use of plastic materials, polythene bags, cosmetics, household plastics, commercial plastic products which are “non-renewable materials” is increasing the level of pollution in the environment.
Plastic is a chemical polymer that takes a long time to break down in nature or recycle in factories. Therefore, plastic use and waste creates long-term harmful effects on the environment. Our ignorance is the main cause of plastic pollution. NSS Program Officer Professor Arup Patari said in the discussion.
College Principal Dr. Anupam Guha presided over the event. He said that despite various bans of the State Pollution Control Board, we are using various materials made of plastic including poly bags in our daily work, moreover, we are throwing it everywhere along with various household wastes, as a result of which the drains are getting filled and creating a terrible situation. Pollution is increasing due to lack of awareness. Since plastic is a waste material, it remains in the environment until it is recycled after its creation, constantly entering the food cycle, which will create a horrible situation in the future, destroying the balance of the environment.
He appealed to all present not to use plastic. Students requested to make the college campus plastic free. He appealed to everyone including the present villagers to ban plastic through gradual awareness. Biodegradable materials are currently being used. Awareness is the only recourse for a civilized society.
Sanu Das, NSS volunteer welcomed all and requested everyone to realize the importance of today’s programme. At the end of the activity NSS volunteers distributed various leaflets on controlling plastic pollution.
