PCC Slams Govt Over Law and Order Breakdown, Alleges Political Patronage of Criminals

Agartala, 22nd July 2025:  The Tripura Pradesh Congress Committee (TPCC) on Monday launched a sharp attack on the BJP-led state government over the alleged collapse of law and order in the state, accusing it of providing political protection to individuals involved in heinous crimes.

In a press statement, TPCC spokesperson Prabir Chakraborty cited official data revealed by Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha during the last budget session of the Assembly, which stated that 144 women were raped and 31 women murdered in the state over the past year.

Chakraborty also referred to the latest statistics released by the Home Department in June, which documented seven murders, 31 unnatural deaths, 31 cases of rape or gang rape, 37 robberies, and several other violent crimes. Describing the situation as “deeply alarming and unacceptable,” he said the ground reality sharply contradicts the administration’s claims.

He further highlighted recent incidents that have shocked the public, including the gang rape and murder of an 11-year-old girl in Jirania, the killing of two housewives in Bamutia, and a horrific assault in Agartala in which a woman’s tongue was reportedly severed.

The statement also pointed to rising incidents of politically motivated violence. Chakraborty alleged that BJP mandal leaders led mass assaults in Shalbagan, and that a shop belonging to a minority Congress worker was raided and vandalized in Sonamura.

“The Chief Minister and senior police officials often claim that Tripura ranks among the top states in law and order. But the reality on the ground tells a very different story,” the TPCC statement asserted.

Raising concerns over the increasing drug menace in the state, Chakraborty noted that while the Chief Minister recently acknowledged the involvement of “influential individuals and their relatives” in drug trafficking, no significant arrests have been made. “Only small-time carriers, often linked to the ruling party, are being picked up occasionally,” he alleged.

He also accused BJP leaders and ministers of constantly invoking past incidents to divert public attention from their present failures. “But the people of Tripura are no longer blind to what’s happening around them,” he said.

The Congress party demanded immediate action from the state government and police administration, urging them to act impartially and take strict measures against those involved in criminal activities, regardless of their political affiliations.

“We strongly condemn the deteriorating law and order situation and urge the government to uphold justice, ensure public safety, and restore accountability in governance,” the statement concluded.
