Agartala, 20th March 2025: The Pradesh Congress today launched a protest in Agartala, highlighting multiple civic issues plaguing the residents under the Agartala Municipal Corporation (AMC).
The demonstration, organized by the Sadar District Congress Committee, began with a rally from Pradesh Congress Bhavan and culminated in a deputation to the AMC Mayor.
The Congress alleged that the city is grappling with increasing mosquito infestation, lack of access to clean drinking water, irregular garbage collection, a deteriorating drainage system, and corruption surrounding the Chaitra Mela.
Speaking at the protest, the Sadar District Congress President criticized the AMC for failing to provide essential civic services. He pointed out that the mosquito menace has disrupted daily life, including in educational institutions and government offices. The party demanded immediate scientific measures to control the mosquito population.
The protestors also raised concerns over the severe drinking water crisis in Agartala, blaming mismanagement under the Jal Jeevan Mission. Allegations of corruption in the scheme were highlighted, with the demand for an immediate solution to provide purified drinking water to the residents.
Additionally, the Congress accused certain ruling party-backed elements of extorting money from small traders during the Chaitra Mela by illegally occupying trade spaces and demanding large sums for setting up stalls. The party urged the AMC to intervene and ensure legitimate traders receive fair access.
With the monsoon season approaching, the Congress also pressed for urgent scientific solutions to the city’s poor drainage system, which causes severe waterlogging even after moderate rainfall.
Another key demand raised was the implementation of 200 days of work under the Tripura Urban Employment (TWE) scheme with a daily wage of ₹340—an unfulfilled promise from the 2018 state elections.
