Agartala, 4th December 2023:   CPIM politburo member Manik Sarkar visited the house of a family of three who committed suicide in Thakurpara area of Melaghar on Monday. He expressed his condolences to the relatives and neighbours of the deceased and wished peace for their souls. He also tried to find out the reason behind their extreme step. He was accompanied by former ministers Bhanulal Saha and Manik Dey along with a delegation of party leaders.

The family of Chinta Haran Pal, a 70-year-old idol maker, his wife Pratima Pal, a 50-year-old mid-day meal cook, and their daughter Monika Pal, a 20-year-old college dropout, was found dead on their bed on Friday morning. The daughter had lost her mobility at the age of 6 or 7 and had discontinued her education after the second year of college. The family was living in poverty and hardship, but had no apparent signs of distress or depression.

The incident came to light when a woman, who used to work with Pratima Pal at a school, came to call her and found the door of their house locked. She informed Chinta Haran Pal’s younger brother, who broke the door and discovered the bodies of the parents and the daughter. He alerted the police and the local people, who were shocked and saddened by the tragedy.

The police have registered a case of suicide and are investigating the possible motives and circumstances of the incident. They have also collected the post-mortem reports and the statements of the relatives and neighbours of the deceased. They have not ruled out any foul play or pressure from any source.

Manik Sarkar said that the incident was a reflection of the social and economic crisis faced by the poor and the marginalized in the state. He blamed the ruling party for failing to provide adequate relief and support to the people during the pandemic and the lockdown. He demanded that the government should take immediate steps to address the issues of poverty, unemployment, health and education in the state. He also assured that his party would stand by the bereaved family and the people of the area.
