Agartala, 8th July 2024:   Residents from five villages along the Agartala-Sonamura road blocked traffic on Monday afternoon demanding the immediate closure of a newly established poultry farm in Padmanagar area. The unrest stems from allegations that Swapan Debnath, a local businessman from Charilam, circumvented regulatory protocols in setting up the facility seven months ago.

According to villagers, Debnath failed to heed community concerns regarding environmental regulations and odor control during the construction of the farm. “We repeatedly advised him to follow all guidelines and prevent any foul odor in our vicinity,” remarked a spokesperson from the protesting villages, highlighting the communal frustration.

Local authorities, including the Sub-Divisional Magistrate and district police, were alerted to the matter, prompting interventions, albeit with limited results. “We reached out to authorities on July 5th, but no action followed,” lamented one resident.

Frustrated by the lack of resolution, the villagers resorted to blocking the road as a form of protest, emphasizing their determination for immediate action.
