Agartala, 24th November 2025: The daily scene outside Unakoti District Hospital has turned into one of filth and shame. Human waste, urine, and dirty drain water flow unchecked across the road, spilling into the hospital premises. Patients, their relatives, and even passersby are forced to wade through the contaminated water to enter the hospital. Authorities, however, remain unmoved.
Last night, Bhagwan Nagar Panchayat member Akmad Ali voiced his anger: “Every day countless patients cross this filthy water to enter the hospital. They don’t even realize the dangerous contamination they are touching. Despite repeated complaints to the hospital’s Medical Superintendent, no action has been taken. He drives in by car, perhaps that’s why the situation escapes his notice. The matter has been reported to the state government multiple times, but no effective steps have been taken.”
Hospital drains inside the premises have long remained clogged and unclean, causing dirty water to spill directly onto the road. Residents fear the growing risk of disease outbreaks.
Adding to the outrage, a local social worker recently claimed that Rs 65 lakh had been sanctioned for repairing the hospital’s front drainage system. The announcement, made in the presence of the Medical Superintendent and an executive engineer, was heard by many. Yet, no work has been carried out. The public now demands answers: Where did the Rs 65 lakh go? Was the allocation real, or was it a false publicity stunt?
The situation escalated late Sunday night around 11 p.m., when members of Chandipur Youth Congress and Bhagwan Nagar Panchayat Congress took matters into their own hands. They brought in a dredger and began cleaning the drains themselves.
Akmad Ali further pointed out the gravity of the issue:
“There is a drinking water tank in front of the hospital where people collect water. A mosque is also nearby. How can people walk through sewage to pray? The administration’s negligence has forced us to act on our own.”
Local residents have made one clear demand — the immediate construction of a permanent drainage system to make the hospital road safe for patients and the public. Meanwhile, the unresolved mystery of the Rs 65 lakh allocation has only fueled public anger.
The people’s question remains: Is a hospital drowning in sewage the face of development, or the naked truth of corruption?
