Agartala, 27th July 2025:    The 11th Sub-Divisional Council meeting of the Tripura Khet Majdoor Union was held today at Dharmanagar with renewed focus on the rights and welfare of agricultural workers. The event began with the hoisting of the organization’s flag by Bhanu Lal Saha, central vice-president of the All India Agricultural Workers Union (AIAWU), followed by a tribute to martyrs and a mass song presented by artists of the Tripura Cultural Integration Center.

The inaugural session was presided over by the Sub-Divisional Council President Maklichur Rahman and attended by council members Kamalaksh Chakraborty, Niranjan Chakraborty and Shelly Acharya. Bhanu Lal Saha delivered the keynote address, while AIAWU state leader Durgesh Roy was present as a special guest. A total of 165 representatives from 12 local committees participated in the meeting.

During his speech, Bhanu Lal Saha highlighted the growing hardships faced by agricultural workers. “Today, the condition of agricultural workers is becoming deplorable. Land acquisition, lack of fair prices for crops, and job insecurity dominate their lives,” he said. “If we do not stand united, there will be no remedy for this injustice,” he warned.

Saha criticized the central and state governments for their alleged apathy toward rural workers. “The schemes announced for agricultural workers remain on paper. There is hardly any work under MGNREGA now. Social security, health security, and old-age pensions are all being neglected,” he asserted.

He accused the BJP-led government of abandoning democratic principles. “This BJP does not accept democracy or the Constitution. We must fight to protect both and overthrow this undeclared emergency,” he said, calling for intensified resistance against what he termed a “neo-fascist regime.”

Saha further declared: “The All India Agricultural Workers Union has long been fighting for the rights of rural laborers. Our struggle will continue both at the state and national level. Every agricultural worker must become aware and organized so that justice and rights can be ensured.”

Following the general session, a new 28-member Sub-Divisional Council and a 15-member editorial board were constituted. In the first meeting of the newly formed committee, Maklichur Rahman was unanimously re-elected as president and Anukul Das was elected as the new secretary.

Twelve representatives presented detailed organizational and political reports, reaffirming the union’s resolve to fight for agrarian rights and rural justice. Several leaders echoed Bhanu Lal Saha’s sentiments, accusing the BJP government of mismanaging agricultural policy and undermining India’s democratic framework.

“Our organization will continue to fight against the wrong policies of the government,” he also added.
