Agartala, 7th April 2026: The proverb “might is right” appears to have played out in the Rajanya-controlled Lake Chowmuhani market, where small traders allege they have been unfairly targeted following a sudden administrative overhaul.
Yesterday local MLA and Mayor of Agartala Municipal Corporation, Dipak Majumder, visited the market amid rising complaints against the existing market committee. After holding a meeting with stakeholders, he dissolved the old committee and formed a new temporary body. The newly constituted committee includes officials from two local clubs along with representatives of traders.
However, within just 24 hours of the new committee’s formation, tensions escalated. Today morning, officials of the municipal corporation reportedly began demolishing shops belonging to small-scale vendors operating in the market.
Many of these traders had been running temporary stalls under umbrellas within the market premises. According to affected vendors, no alternative arrangements were provided before the demolition drive was carried out.
The timing has further intensified concerns. With the Bengali New Year just a week away, traders say they were already under financial strain, managing debts and preparing for one of the busiest periods of the year. The sudden eviction has left many uncertain about their livelihoods.
Despite their grievances, most small traders have remained silent, fearing repercussions. “We are helpless. We have families to feed, but no place to do business now,” said one vendor, requesting anonymity.
The incident has raised questions about the handling of local market governance and the impact of administrative decisions on vulnerable sections of the business community.
